Lapeer County was established in 1833 by a man named Alvin Hart, who was also one of the county's first settlers. Upon arriving, he oversaw construction of the county's courthouse. The courthouse is built in the Greek Revival architectural style, and it's the oldest courthouse in the state. In 2015, about 88,400 people lived in Lapeer County.
