Keweenaw County was founded in 1861. Its county seat is Eagle River. It is one of the state's smallest county by population size, which was only 2,156 in 2010. By population density, it has less than 4.5 people per square mile. Long before the county was established, mining was an important economic activity for native inhabitants.
